Many First Aid Kits Not Fit For Job

Following evidence at the recent July 7th inquest where it was suggested that many basic first aid kits lacked key equipment, the BHTA has called on the government to introduce new guidelines that will ensure kits are fit for purpose.
According to the BHTA, the current system for providing First Aid Kits is haphazard with very few guidelines either about where kits should be placed or what they should contain. The result is that many public places have no kits available and those that do often lack basic items such as burns dressings, foil survival blankets, or serious trauma dressings.
The BHTA is calling for a major review which should cover guidelines on content and location. Director General
Ray Hodgkinson MBE said; "Sadly the July 7th inquest highlighted the failings of first aid kits. We believe that kits can make a major contribution to saving lives but only if careful thought is given to the right locations and tougher regulation to control the contents. A box claiming to be a First Aid Kit that only contains a few simple bandages creates a false sense of security. It’s time to ensure that all kits contain the right items and that means including more equipment that can help in an emergency."
