Mobility scooter industry launch anti duty campaign
Some of the country's biggest mobility scooter retailers have launched a campaign to over turn an EU duty on scooters. The "say no to 10%" campaign was launched this week in response to a decision taken by the EU and the World Customs Organization that have re classified mobility scooters into a general motor vehicle category rather than carriages for disabled people. The change in category means the EU has added an extra 10% duty and is requiring all Member States to impose this. Industry leaders are being forced to add on the cost to the price of scooters resulting in potentially higher prices for customers, apart from the classification being vulnerable to further tax changes.
Launching the campaign British Healthcare Trades Association Director General, Ray Hodgkinson MBE said; "This crazy 'inexplicable' ruling treats cars and mobility scooters in the same category and is frankly an insult to the many disabled users who depend on scooters to get them around. We are determined to get the EU and the World Customs Organization to think again and see sense."
